Integrated palaeoecological studies of two fiord sediment sequences in the province of Blekinge, SE Sweden, covering the time span 11,000–5000 cal BP, reveal the timing and the environment for the Ancylus Lake/Littorina Sea transition 9800–8500 cal BP. The first ingression of saline water into the Baltic Sea through the Danish Straits occurred earlier than formerly assumed. New evidence, particularly mineral magnetic and palaeobotanical analyses, demonstrate that on the general trend of the eustatically caused Littorina transgression several minor fluctuations of the water level can be identified between 8500 and 5000 cal years BP. A distinct regression phase around 8100 cal BP is correlated with the Greenland ice-core cold event dated to 8200 ice-core years BP. This is described as a regional climatic catastrophe for the Baltic Sea region. The coastal stratigraphy is compared with the offshore stratigraphy earlier studied. A tentative shore displacement curve for Early and Middle Holocene is presented.  相似文献

Along the northeast Greenland continental margin, bedrock on interfjord plateaus is highly weathered, whereas rock surfaces in fjord troughs are characterized by glacial scour. Based on the intense bedrock weathering and lack of glacial deposits from the last glaciation, interfjord plateaus have long been thought to be ice-free throughout the last glacial maximum (LGM). In recent years there is growing evidence from shelf and fjord settings that the northeast Greenland continental margin was more extensively glaciated during the LGM than previously thought. However, little is still known from interfjord settings. We present cosmogenic 10Be data from meltwater channels and weathered sandstone outcrops on Jameson Land, an interfjord highland north of Scoresby Sund. The mean exposure age of samples from channel beds (n = 3) constrains on the onset of deglaciation on interior Jameson Land to 18.5 ± 1.3–21.4 ± 1.9 ka (for erosion conditions of 0–10 mm/ka, respectively). This finding adds to growing evidence that the northeast Greenland continental margin was more heavily glaciated during the LGM than previously thought.  相似文献

This paper focuses on how landscape development in areas of land uplift has come to direct the primary human colonisation on the coastal areas in north-western Estonia. A Swedish-speaking minority population has at least since medieval times settled these areas. On the basis of an estimation of the rate of land uplift, the shoreline development and topography of a section of the coast was reconstructed. In this respect, it appears that large changes have occurred in that during the Middle Ages, the coast was much steeper but also much longer than today, full of little bays and points. This means that the drainage of near-shore areas was more intensive and that it was possible to find suitable landing places and well-sheltered harbours in some locations. These locations appear to have been primary settlements of the Swedish-speaking colonists and are very similar to coastal settlements of the same age along other coasts of the central Baltic Sea basin. Thus, the results presented in the paper allow the selection of primary research sites for field studies of the early settlement history of this ancient Estonian minority. Analytical data for the Atlantis II and Discovery deeps in the Red Sea are given. The data were collected in March and June 1976 during the 22nd cruise of R/V Akademik Kurchatov in the Indian Ocean. On board analyses were performed of density, chlorinity, Mg, Ca, Sr and trace elements. The salinity, calculated from the density, is related to the chlorinity by S = 1.67 Cl + 4.02. The Ca-salinity relation is linear for both deeps showing that intermediate waters are formed by mixing of the brines with Red Sea water (RSDW). The hot brine (62°C) in the Atlantis II deep contains approx. 80 mg/kg of Fe and Mn while the warm brine (45°C) in the Discovery deep has a very low concentration of Fe and approx. 50 mg/kg of Mn. Mixing of RSDW containing 2 ml/l of oxygen with the anoxic deep brines causes precipitation of hydrous Mn(IV) and Fe(III) hydroxides. These two processes occur at different depths in the two deeps due to the formation of the warm (48–49°) intermediate brine in the Atlantis II deep. The oxidation-hydrolysis reactions proposed are supported by alkalinity-depth profiles and measurements of pH. These reactions also explain most of the trace element distributions and the composition of the SiO2-Fe(III) hydroxide slurry recovered by some water samplers in the Atlantis II deep.  相似文献

在野外水样监测(1999年5月-2000年10月)和土地利用调查的基础上,利用遥感影像和数字化地形图,运用GIS的空间分析和图形叠置功能,研究于桥水库域地表水非点源N的时空变化特征。结果表明,在时间上,NH4^ -N的峰值出现在枯水期,而NO3^-N的峰值出现在丰水期;在空间上,NH4^ -N含量在中部平原区最高,南部丘陵和北部山区居其次,NO3^-N含量的变化则不具有明显的规律性。NH4^ -N和NO3^-不同的时空分布特征与它们的化学性质及流域内土地利用格局有关。  相似文献

Slip partitioning along major convergent plate boundaries   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Along plate boundaries characterized by oblique convergence, earthquake slip vectors are commonly rotated toward the normal of the trench with respect to predicted plate motion vectors. Consequently, relative plate motion along such convergent margins must be partitioned between displacements along the thrust plate interface and deformation within the forearc and back-arc regions. The deformation behind the trench may take the form of strike-slip motion, back-arc extension, or some combination of both. We observe from our analysis of the Harvard Moment Tensor Catalog that convergent arcs characterized by back-arc spreading, specifically the Marianas and New Hebrides, are characterized by a large degree of slip partitioning. However, the observed rates, directions, and location of back-arc spreading are not sufficient to account for degree of partitioning observed along the respective arcs, implying that the oblique component of subduction is also accommodated in part by shearing of the overriding plate. In the case of the Sumatran arc, where partitioning is accommodated by strike-slip faulting in the overriding plate, the degree of partitioning is similar to that observed along the Marianas, but the result is viewed with caution because it is based on a predicted plate motion vector that is based on locally derived earthquake slip vectors. In the case of the Alaskan-Aleutian arc, where back-arc spreading is also absent, the degree of partitioning is less and rotation of slip vectors toward the trench normal appears to increase linearly as a function of the obliquity of convergence. If partitioning in the Alaskan-Aleutian arc is accommodated by strike-slip faulting within the upper plate, the positive relationship between obliquity of convergence and the rotation of earthquake slip vectors to the trench normal may reflect that either (1) the ratio of the depth extent of strike-slip faults behind the trenchZ s to the subduction thrustZ t increases westward along the arc, (2) the dip of the subduction thrust increases westward along the arc, or (3) the strength of the subduction thrust decreases westward along the arc.  相似文献

Both monitoring and model simulation are useful for understanding and detecting changes in the environment. To understand and simulate leaching in small forested catchments, it is important to have knowledge of soil processes. Here, we describe recent development of the Hydrological Predictions for the Environment (HYPE) model for forested catchments. HYPE includes an organic carbon (OC) variable in addition to previously published nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and water flow models. The aspects addressed in the current study included P concentrations under low‐flow conditions and high concentrations of inorganic N. HYPE was further developed based on nine small forested catchments (0.5–200 ha) in Sweden, which were calibrated separately using local data. The model (excluding the OC variable) was tested on a larger set of forest catchments from the operational HYPE model of Sweden (S‐HYPE). We observed the following: (1) dissolved organic P could make a significant contribution to the total P concentration in a stream during low‐flow periods, (2) the inorganic N concentration simulated in a stream improved when part of the atmospheric N was retained in the soil, (3) the soil flow path formulation was critical for simulating concentration dynamics, and (4) evaluating an additional variable (OC) further elucidated the soil runoff processes in the model.
